Robotics

This term we are learning about Robotics. Each Thursday, Scott, an expert in robotics, supports us to learn, create and share as robotic engineers.

We have learnt that robotic engineers create machines to do important jobs. The first step is to create a dumb machine. The next step for a robotic engineer is to create instructions to make the machine smart so it can do its job.

In robotics, we are really stretching our collaboration muscles learning and problem solving together. We are using our noticing and revising muscles to follow instructions, revisit our steps to make changes, think carefully about how to solve issues and identify what our next steps are.

Ollie and Ryan stretching their noticing and revising muscles to solve a problem
Annalies and Lealou using their collaboration muscles
Blair and Sky collaborating and problem solving
Robotic Engineers Rosie and Terenzo stretching those noticing muscles to create and learn

Danny the Champion of the World

Danny Debate from tracey hill on Vimeo.

The Rowi Kiwi reading group have been reading Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl. They have been discussing the text and arguing with manners about their opinions about the text. They have been backing up their thoughts with evidence and have been considering others points of view. Watch the video for a snapshot of their court case for Danny's father.

To argue about a text they needed to infer meaning, make connections, summarise information and understand the vocabulary in the text. They brought all these reading skills together to discuss the text.

A snippet of some of the discussions
Do you think that Danny's Dad is a good role model
Liam I disagree because he looked after his son like a mother would. He took care of him and gave him a home he loved him!

I disagree with you.. because he is teaching his son a bad sport it's like smoking… it illegal and very bad for you.
Ok well he is a bad father he has been out poaching more than once and in the book it says, and I quote, “my own dad was the one who taught me, when I was a boy times were bad for a lot of people, I used to go out with my dad and help him”
my own dad was the one who taught me
He said that he shouldn’t have done it… I quote ‘...I know I shouldn’t have done it and I am very, very sorry…’ I need to do something one minute.
Yes but dannys grandad was a bad influence so things can’t change…. That was the way the cookie crumbled…
I Guess we are but.. What do you think?? Ok well tell me why… debate with me…
GOOD ROLE MODEL. GOOD ROLE MODEL. GOOD ROLE MODEL.

Good side Megan and Kali

Kalis thoughts…
He smiles with his eyes and not fakes with his mouth, he loves to get into stories and make them full of excitement

Megan’s thoughts…
You can tell..
He smiles truthfully and never tells lies…
He is a good storyteller and he makes them great stories, and he is really funny and when he helps out with things, he NEVER takes over… He always lets Danny do it all.

Now for the BAD stuff...

Bad side Megan and Kali...

Megan's thoughts...
No because he is dumb enough to leave his son in the caravan by himself and go off to break the law and steal for a sport, and… not telling his son where he is going.
And he lets his son drive in the dead of night in a car, without seeing much and on a narrow road with a police nearby…
He promises to not try loose him like his mother, but does he protect??? NO!!

Kali’s thoughts…
but no because he has been poaching pheasants and he left Danny alone in the caravan.

If you were Danny would you have done anything differently when his Dad didn’t return home after his poaching mission? Why or why not? Use evidence from the text. What side are you on❔  I think if my family was gonna get shot or in trouble I would try and help even if it was a bit dangerous.  So in what way would you help? In any way possible but for Danny the case was driving the car out to find his father.  I would probably do the same as you said but for Danny to go out driving in a car at the age of 9 is… awesome! Awesome but scary I think he acted well to drive and aid his dad back to the car for his father's safety.  Yes, he did really really well for being a child but also it was pretty awesome when he skidded off the side of the road. Yeah I think it was great what he did for his family's safety. Ok so do you agree even though it was quite dangerous it was a good thing to do?  Yes, and also just saying, there was 0% chance of him being shot because all the keepers had gone in for the night but he could’ve fallen down a trap. Yes I think the same and I think we have pretty much had the same thoughts on this throughout the whole discussion.  So is this the end of the argument even though it wasn’t one? Yeah I think so.

Playing musical instruments

Blair absorbed in his learning
Annaliese and Keiarliya enjoying making
music together
We are learning to play music. Some of us are learning to play the glockenspiel and some of us are learning to play the recorder. We are using our perseverance muscles to keep trying and trying.

Alex and Zach trying to spell as
many words as they can with the
glockenspiel notes.
Gemma persevering to plat Mary had
a little lamb
We have been reading music and playing songs.
Hunta absorbed in his playing

Lachlan and Max figuring out which words they
can play with the glockenspiel notes.  They
won the longest word competition
CABBAGE and BAGGAGE.

Lealou composing her own song.

Kali creating her own music
Terenzo absorbed playing the glockenspiel

Kieron writing his own song and making changes as he goes
(Using his revising muscle)
